Modern Inquisitions: Peru and the Colonial Origins of the Civilized World (Latin America Otherwise)By Irene Silverblatt

Trying to understand how “civilized” people could embrace fascism, Hannah Arendt searched for a precedent in modern Western history. She found it in nineteenth-century colonialism, with its mix of bureaucratic rule, racial superiority, and appeals to rationality. Modern Inquisitions takes Arendt’s insights into the barbaric underside of Western civilization and moves them back to the sixteenth century and seventeenth, when Spanish colonialism dominated the globe. Irene Silverblatt describes how the modern world developed in tandem with Spanish imperialism and argues that key characteristics of the modern state are evident in the workings of the Inquisition. Her analysis of the tribunal’s persecution of women and men in colonial Peru illuminates modernity’s intricate “dance of bureaucracy and race.”

Drawing on extensive research in Peruvian and Spanish archives, Silverblatt uses church records, evangelizing sermons, and missionary guides to explore how the emerging modern world was built, experienced, and understood by colonists, native peoples, and Inquisition officials: Early missionaries preached about world history and about the races and nations that inhabited the globe; Inquisitors, able bureaucrats, defined who was a legitimate Spaniard as they executed heretics for “reasons of state”; the “stained blood” of Indians, blacks, and descendants of Jews and Moors was said to cause their deficient character; and native Peruvians began to call themselves Indian.

In dialogue with Arendt and other theorists of modernity, Silverblatt shows that the modern world’s underside is tied to its origins in colonialism and to its capacity to rationalize violence. Modern Inquisitions forces the reader to confront the idea that the Inquisition was not only a product of the modern world of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, but party to the creation of the civilized world we know today.

Review

“For anyone interested in Military History, this is a fascinating book….Well illustrated and written, this is a social and martial history all in one.” (Ancient Egypt Magazine)“…the reader is quickly drawn into a journey into man’s past that is both illuminating and entertaining. If more scholarly works were as well researched and as scintillating, the hallowed halls of academia would be that much more attractive!” (Armchair General.com)“…truly a high quality product, beautifully produced and with lavish illustration throughout…a great read and highly recommended.” (Military Illustrated,01/012011)“… handsome, 494 page volume (including glossary, bibliography and index) investigates both the technical aspects as well as the societal impetus behind sword evolution in a way that is both academic as well as highly fascinating…. presents swords as seen through the eyes of prominent historical figures who used them and of particular interest is the highly detailed focus on actual pedigree pieces. Generously illustrated with period images, fine line drawings and photographs of original antique swords from museums and private collections. Whether a new enthusiast just starting out, a practitioner of the sword arts or an advanced aficionado or collector, there is something in “Swords And Swordsmen” for everyone …” (Swordforum.com)"For modern fencers, Swords and Swordsmen vividly brings to life the weapons from which our sport derives as Mike Loades shares his passion and fascination for the sword and takes the reader on a journey through history. Meticulously researched and beautifully illustrated by over 200 photographs and 100 line drawings…”" (The Sword)"From its earliest pages to its epilogue (which treats the sword in its modern incarnation from a 19th century dueling implement to the modern sport of fencing), Swords And Swordsmen makes it clear that no study of the design, function and symbolism of the sword can be entirely complete without an understanding of the code of chivalry, and vice-versa." (Chivalry Today)"A superb history of swords and swordsmen, with the most breathtaking coverage from the earliest days to modern times. Brilliant." (Books Monthly)

First, a warning, this is my first review of a book. There are bound to be spelling errors, grammar issues and other such nonsense but I'm going to give it a go none-the-less.I've been a fan of Mike Loades since finding his Weapons That Made Britain series. I've been sick and tired of seeing videos, movies, TV and other such media talking pure bunk about the weapons, armour and people of the past. Mike took time to actually do REAL research, to learn, to experiment and do as much as possible to recreate even a little piece of the past which taught me quite a few things I simply didn't know. And that's exactly what this book did as well. I've always been focused on 1350-1430 or so in the European Martial Arts, and 1500-1650 in the Japanese Marital Arts world, so this book, opened up a whole new number of worlds for me, one where the sword was pivotal to survival, to countries, to wealth. And that says a lot right there. The ability for Mike to really put aside all the stuff we THINK we knew about how swords were used and more importantly show us WHY they were used is simply invaluable to anyone who has even a passing interest in the history of not just the blade, but the man (or woman) behind the blade.I spend most of my summer inside a suit of early 15th century armour, helping correct some of horrible things media has done in its view of the sword and armour, and Mike's book is yet another treasure trove of information I can use to better educate not just my students, but people with only a passing interest in the sword. The book is well written, laid out in a chronological order, so the development of the sword, from its axe-like proto-history, to the cutlasses and sabers of the more modern era are all clear, concise and contain concrete examples of the people that used them. The illustrations and photographs are very well done, and do not distract the reader.Well done Mike, well done.

Swords...and swordsmen. Just hearing those words evoke images of powerful, fearsome warriors and the great weapons they wielded: King Arthur and his Excalibur; Roland and his Durendal; the Japanese warrior Yamato Takeru and his Kusanagi, the Grasscutter. Even fiction and fantasy include mythical swords for their characters, such as Glamdring, the sword of the wizard Gandalf from the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien. The personable Mike Loades displays authority on things military on many historical television programmes, yet for those wanting more, this book is a great start for in-depth inquiry. Mr. Loades' passion comes through in his television appearances, but also in his book."Swords and Swordsmen" takes the reader on a journey of the sword, mankind's legendary weapon of mayhem against his fellow man. After all, a sword is a weapon designed to inflict bodily harm. Yet what a marvelous legacy and history are found herein! One learns about the first sword from ancient times and into the 20th century. There were swords for many purposes, such as combat, dress, cavalry, dueling, sparring and beheadings. No stone is left unturned by Mr. Loades...even one with a sword in it. They're all here, from the glaive to the rapier. There is even a small mention of women duelists--courtesans, actually--fighting for their own definition of honour.Mr. Loades is thorough in his look at all facets of the sword. The manufacture and artistic qualities of swordsmithing are discussed. The American jeweller Tiffany and Company made a bespoke sword for a famous historical military figure, but you will have to read the book to discover his identity. There are many excellent photographs and illustrations from history. Many special swords are featured, as well as the personages associated with them: king and emperors, army officers and duelists. All in all, this is a fascinating, engaging and informative read. Highly recommended to all who are interested in the sword and historical weaponry.

The only way you can understand what it's like for a Black child in America is to walk in their shoes. No one wants to do that, especially when the walk is difficult and confusing. A Hope Unseen is difficult and confusing. Comprehension of WHY and HOW are questions that can't be answered for you because it's not part of your reality. Ron Suskind attempted to provide a glimpse into the world of hope unseen. The world of children born into generational poverty with no stimulus for improvement. You're predestined to become a product of your surroundings - or are you. Cedric Jennings was born to a mother who wanted more for him, as most mothers do. But Cedric's mother built a foundation of "you are better than what we live in." Cedric was smart, curious and because of his foundation, rooted in his church through his mother, he wanted more. I was encouraged by Cedric's life. I wondered about other students in those circumstances and I hurt because they learn to give up so early in their lives. We throw so many people away, but occasionally one shines enough to be lifted.

The difficult journey from hopelessness to "hope in the unseen," to, that is, faith that a better life awaits, is an often told story. In America, we have the "Autobiography" of Benjamin Franklin; slave narratives, like Frederick Douglass's "Narrative"; poverty-to-riches fiction like Horatio Alger's; immigrant narratives, like David Eggers's "What is the What." There is more than one account of minority students and their path to the Ivy League. For a writer with this sort of "redemption" material, the difficult task is to shape a story whose ending we might guess at but whose details are so compelling that a reader can't put the book down. And this Ron Suskind has done. Because he tells Cedric Lavar Jennings's story in the voices not only of Cedric, but also of his mother, Barbara; his father, Cedric Gilliam; his classmates and teachers at Ballou High school and at Brown University; his pastor, Bishop Long; and many others, the book has a complexity that a similar story told in a single voice could not have. Suskind presents these people exactly as they are, with not only their strengths but their weaknesses in full view: Barbara's difficulties with money management; Cedric's standoffishness when his dorm mates attempt to befriend him; the father's struggle to stay off heroin. It is difficult to call this book "inspirational," as some have done. As Suskind points out, he chose to profile Cedric Jennings precisely because "the basic appeal of Cedric's story was never rooted in his exceptionalism . . .he is, in his basic makeup, so very much like countless other young people . . .". And Suskind does not spare the institutions that fail students like Cedric every day: the bleak public school where learning is almost impossible, the "sink-or-swim approach for poorly prepared minority students at places like Brown. Throughout the book, Suskind explores both the positive and negative aspects of affirmative action, letting the details of Cedric's experience make a case for it. This book is one family's experience. It does not--it cannot--encompass the experience of every inner city child who hopes for the unseen. But it does offer powerful testimony not just for broad prescriptions or programs, but for the incremental powers of love and determination. Recently on NPR, I heard a review of "A Hope in the Unseen" as one of those books not to be missed. The reviewer was right.

Intriguing Read. I had to read this book for class. The author does a great job of inviting readers into the world of the main character -- Cedric, who is a young black male who has to deal with various types of environmental, racial, economic, and personal obstacles in his life. We get to see how young Cedric lives and battles with his surroundings as goes through his unique life journey. It is a solid read.Readability Factor - below averageUplifting Factor - averageOverall Story -- pretty good

I was surprised to look up and see this book listed on Harvard's Summer reading list for incoming freshman, and then i went and read the book myself and found the reason why. it is a well written portrayal of the struggle of one particular youth to over come the odds and grab hold on the brass ring. Cedric took a journey that is not often an option for many African-American youth, and beat the odds in spite of his short comings! reading through the book what really stood out to me the most was his sat score. let college board tell the story, they will insist that a strong sat score is necessary to achieve success in college. it was after reading this book that i realized that the sat test cannot measure a man's level of determination, or his work equity. whatever score is achieved, it has no finality in the life of the man."I shall arise from the ashes, though defeated, with my head unbowed"Nate Silver
